On February 9, 2023, the Briscoe Center hosted this fascinating conversation between Executive Director Don Carleton and Ivan Schwartz, renowned sculptor and founder of StudioEIS, a design studio located in Brooklyn that is responsible for many significant commemorative sculptures of iconic figures from American history. Their discussion opens with the beginning of StudioEIS and goes on to explore what and who we choose to commemorate in the development of our national symbols.

Statues of Change

Lest We Forget, Statues of Limitation.  A film by Ivan Schwartz April 2017

Over a two-year period, we tracked an unusual high-tech forensic investigation: to discover what George Washington actually looked like at three pivotal moments in his life -- the 19 year-old surveyor, the 45 year-old Commanding General of the American Army and the 57 year-old president taking the oath of office. We then witnessed the creation of three life-sized Washington figures for Mount Vernon’s new museum. This was an episode of the Emmy Award-winning SAVE OUR HISTORY, History's series of quarterly one-hour specials. I was Series Producer (produced, directed, wrote) 2002-2008.
